Please open the link below and finish for an easy 10 class points. If you finish early, continue to prepare your final presentation and turn in late work. As of 7:30 AM today, I am on 5th period's research papers with 7th, 2nd, and 4th to follow in that order.
Take about 20 minutes to prepare for your presentation.
After we've all presented, follow the directions above, including completing the final evaluation/survey.
Tuesday, May 28th
Your Research Report is due at 1 PM today. Make sure that it is attached to the assignment on Google Classroom.
Late Work: I'll take it until I leave school on Monday. No electronic submissions after that time, sorry. Do me a favor and get in your late or missing work before then. I like you, but I don't think either of us wants you to have to retake freshman English as a sophomore, junior, or senior.
Use today to work with your group to make your presentation for the final class period. Here's the schedule for our remaining days:
Tuesday: Every class meets, works on group Final Presentations. Your presentation should cover the most interesting things you learned in your research. Your audience is your peers in class. (50 minutes)
Wednesday: Every class meets and will complete the course evaluation online. (25 minutes)
3rd period will complete their final presentation and course evaluation today.
Thursday-Friday: Presentations & finish any last-minute work
Monday: I haven't been given the schedule for this day yet, but we will have some fun if we have courses scheduled.
Research Paper: Due Tuesday, May 28th: (50 points)
Group Final Presentation: Due on Finals Day: (25 points)
Work hard, get it all done.
Wednesday, May 22nd
Please check your Google Drive shared with me folder for the STAR Reading scores document. Look at your previous scores.
All students will take the STAR Reading assessment today. Click the link below to access it; don't Google it. The monitor password is admin; the password is scca then your 6-digit ID number.
When you're done, please work on writing your paper or reading.
It's a quiet work day. Focus!

Clean your room this week and see if you can find any books that belong to this classroom. I buy many of our classroom library books with my own money, so I would truly appreciate their return!
Please turn in all late or missing work as soon as possible.
The Shakespeare Soundtrack Project is due on the day of your exam. If you do the project, you're excused from the exam. No late Soundtrack projects will be accepted.
We will start the Romeo & Juliet exam on Wednesday instead of Thursday to ensure that all classes have enough time to finish.
Monday, May 6th
General Classes:
2nd & 4th Period will take the literature exam for Romeo & Juliet. You may use the play online, study guides, and lecture notes. You may NOT rip someone else's answers off the internet.
You may turn in the study guides, completed, for a small bonus on exam day. Study guides with identical notes will not receive any bonus.
The Shakespeare Soundtrack Project is due on the day of your exam. If you do the project, you're excused from the exam. No late Soundtrack projects will be accepted.
Honors Class:
Pick up paper and begin your Blue Book exam. It's due at the end of Wednesday's class and is not to be taken home.
Please remember that the Shakespeare Soundtrack Project is optional and due on the day of your exam. If you do the project, you're excused from the exam. Show me your work in progress for feedback!

EVERYONE: I would love to show your RSA video project on the screen tonight for Open House. Send it to me via email or sharing if you haven't already done so. Hope to see you there!
I did a screencast discussing Act I in your study guide. Please take out your study guide and make some notes that will help you remember some of the things that were discussed as you watch the video. There's a small sound gap during question #1 (sorry, I have never done this before) and the entire video is about 30 minutes. Pause it as you wish to write down notes.
UPDATE: For some reason, the video has no audio when I upload it to anything. I've added the audio file, so see if you can open the folder in two separate tabs and play the audio file and video file at the same time.
Grades are looking up, but many of us still have more work to do. I will take assignments today for only half the 20% past quarter late policy. Take some time today to work on the following:
The 3rd Quarter ends on Friday. Please get all work in for this quarter before Friday.
SCCA will begin Saturday School sessions on Saturday, April 6th for students with at least 1 "F." Students in Saturday school will be asked to work on incomplete assignments in order to improve their standing in these courses.
Argumentative Essays are being graded now. Check Aeries if you want your score.
I'm really proud of those who completed their work; I'm seeing writing improve tremendously this year. Keep doing those warmups; they're paying off.
If you did not do it, you will do it in class, on paper, in the library on Monday and Tuesday of next week instead of working on your PSA project. I still like you; however, you need to do your assignments to pass the class.
Your RSA PSA project will be shown in class on Thursday & Friday of next week (the 14th & 15th). You must have it finished before you walk into class that day. Late films will carry a heavy late penalty.
We'll meet in the library this week and next week, except for Wednesday:
2nd & 4th Library Days = Monday & Friday
3rd Library Days = Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, & Friday
5th & 7th Library Days = Tuesday & Thursday
The quarter will end soon. Get your late work in. Now.
Wednesday, February 27th
Your Article of the Week (#12, vaping) is due by Friday. Finish it today.
Your Argumentative Essay was due last week. I have not started scoring them yet, but I will be doing so very soon. Finish it today.
Continue working on script writing, storyboarding, and planning for your RSA Animation film.
Read.

2nd & 4th Library Days = Monday & Friday
3rd Library Days = Tuesday & Friday

Your Argumentative Essay was due last week. I will take it late for a small late penalty. The penalty will grow over time. Make the smart choice. Please come see me if you're struggling. I like helping students. If you are not doing your work this semester, you will have to repeat this class as a 10-12th grader. This is not something you want to do. Please do your work.
Please submit your completed Argumentative Essay to Google Classroom by today (I will not be able to begin scoring them until Sunday.) Please read my feedback on your document and come see me if you need more help this week.

Posluch Sample Essay <---- Here's my draft in progress. Use it as a model as you see fit. Don't steal my sentences or my work.
Keep these requirements in mind:
A best draft, complete, that shows critical thought and research. The draft should answer the burning questions: Which life skills are the most important? How can I (or any student) own these? How do I build them before I graduate?)
Evidence to support claims, wisely selected and used well. I will be looking for citations in your essay.
Think of a reasonable counterargument and address it. (Who might not agree with you? Who needs to be convinced? Write directly to them, showing understanding of their position)
Correctly structured sentences, showcasing correct usage of compound and complex sentences (correct comma, semicolon, and colon usage).
Thursday-Friday, February 7-8th
MITS 8 Quiz today. Retakes are being done differently now: come in before or after school with your exam, explain your mistakes and why you made them, and I'll restore lost points.
Let's get into the body paragraphs of our essays today. Some recommended tips and tools for writing:
You need to back up your claims with evidence:
Use the Recommended Sources if you're discussing the things we talked about in class, such as self-management. You're welcome to find your own sources.
A best draft, complete, that shows critical thought and research.
Evidence to support claims, wisely selected and used well
Think of a reasonable counterargument and address it.
Correctly structured sentences, showcasing correct usage of compound and complex sentences (correct comma, semicolon, and colon usage).
Monday-Tuesday, February 4-5th
New AoW: Due next week by 4 PM, Friday. Do not fall behind on your AoWs.
Today's Goals: Correctly format a formal academic paper. Find evidence to support claims.
I have created a document for your Argumentative Essay on Google Classroom. Please find it and open it so that I can check it and give you feedback as you write.
Use a font with serifs, size 10-12. I think that Century Schoolbook and Palatino look the nicest. Georgia is another possibility. Times New Roman is probably the most common.
Margins should be 1". Leave your default alone and you should be fine.
Thursday-Friday, January 31st - February 1st
If you're not finished with your Thesis Statement, you need to do so right away. It will be harder to write without it to guide you. Make changes as you go if you need to; that's what good writers do.
Today's Goals: Write an introductory paragraph, find evidence to support claims.
Check the links below for the information you need.
Monday-Tuesday, January 28-29th
Assignment: Write an essay in which you form an argument, answering the following questions with evidence from source material to back up your claims:
Which life skills are the most important?
How do I own these?
How do I build these before I graduate?
I will be teaching a structured essay with an outline, but I'd encourage students to take liberties in moving beyond the structure if you don't think you need it.
Here's what I DO want to see, however:
A best draft, complete, that shows critical thought and research.
Evidence to support claims, wisely selected and used well
Think of a reasonable counterargument and address it.
Correctly structured sentences, showcasing correct usage of compound and complex sentences (correct comma, semicolon, and colon usage).

Spend about 10 minutes writing notes for your pop-up debate question. Be ready to speak for about 30-45 seconds on this topic: What should we be learning in schools? Some items of discussion to consider:
Which classes prepare you with the most important life skills? What are those skills?
Which classes do not?
Which classes or subjects are not taught at school (ours or others), but should be taught?
What does a Sudbury School model get right? What are problems?
What does our traditional school model get right? What are problems?

Article of the Week #9 is due by Friday. Get it in the basket. Late penalties apply.
Your "Newly Minted" Pastiche is now due Monday. Have some fun with it!
A pastiche is a tribute to a particular style, usually writing or art. For this assignment, you should write in the same style as Rick Reilly's piece linked to below, giving "tongue-in-cheek" (sarcastic) advice to a person who is entering a new activity in life, such as being a high school student, child with parents, parent, babysitter, athletic team member, or really anything you know pretty well and could provide advice about. Due Friday.
Article of the Week #9
Annotated, with a 250+ word written reflection. It's an easy assignment; just take the time to do it. You might just learn something!
Welcome back! As promised, semester grades have already been submitted. We will begin 3rd quarter work this week.
This semester, we'll be packaging Article of the Week into larger issues called Burning Questions of the Year. Our question for the month of January:
Which life skills are the most important? (How do I own these? How do I build these before I graduate?)
Expect to wrestle with this question in a number of different forms and articles, some of which you will choose to read and respond to, and all of which I hope you will read in order to form a well-supported position regarding this topic!
Articles (and other things we do with Burning Questions) will be due at the end of the unit. No late work will be accepted after the unit is completed.
No late work for the first semester will be accepted after I leave school at 2:30 on Thursday.
Check the outside window for your final grades. See you in 2019!
Monday, December 10th
Best wishes for your final exams in this class and all your other classes. You have 50 minutes to work today. Get some of the work done today, and prepare yourself to finish on our next scheduled 90-minute class period.
All work for the semester is due before I leave school on Thursday, December 13th. Work done last minute and very late is often of poor quality. I cannot help you or give you feedback on things done last minute and I don't record D's or F's in the gradebook. Eat those frogs and get it done now.
Thursday-Friday, December 6-7th
Finals will begin MONDAY, December 10th. We'll take two days to finish.

Article of the Week 8 has a typo; your reflection does not have to be 400 words. 250 (minimum) will suffice.
This project is optional and can be completed in place of your final exam on December 12th. (That means that if you do the project, you don't have to do the final.)

Be ready to give a presentation. 30 seconds are allowed per slide!
Finish your Poetry Explication essay. I will try to provide comments from home today.
Start early so I can help you. A first draft is due by Friday, but you should get most of your paper written in class. It's foolish to say that you will do work at home when you are here at school.
in docs.google.com, click on the report template for MLA. Copy and paste it onto your document, replace the information with your own work, and consider your formatting mostly solved (minus page numbers and a better font).
Read the model essay at the bottom of the assignment to get an idea of the things you should be looking for in your poem.
DON'T USE OUTSIDE SOURCES. That's a good way to get a zero. Make your own observations. There isn't always a right answer with poetry.

AoW #6 is due this week; please turn it in any day.

SHOWTIME! Deliver your memorized poem. If you're not here or it's not ready, you'll need to deliver it in class next week.
You should have at least half your poem memorized by today.
Article of the Week #6 will be due next week.
I have noticed that some books are leaving the room without me having taken the picture of those who are borrowing them. For example, I bought two new books, The First Rule of Punk and Armina's Voice, both which left the shelf and apparently the room without my knowledge. I am concerned because I don't see any of my students reading them. No one is in trouble and I am happy that students are reading the books, but I do buy most of them with my own money. Please do me the courtesy of taking a picture with them before you take them out of the room. Please return any books you're finished with before you take a new one from the room.
Rewrite your poem by hand several times. Each time, try to write more and more of it from memory.
Read your poem aloud before going to sleep at night, and repeat it when you wake up.
Carry around a copy of your poem. You’ll find several moments throughout the day to reread or recite it.
Practice your poem by saying it to family and friends.
Listen to a recording of your poem and listen to how it is read and what word are emphasized.
Monday-Tuesday, October 15-16th
I did not get many Shipwreck Narratives. I have decided to take pity on you and leave them off your First Quarter grades. They still count. I want them done by Friday.
Continue to read an hour a week on your own. Log your page here on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays while we are reading Of Mice and Men.
Keep up with the study guide.
Thursday-Friday, October 4-5th
Complete a first draft of your shipwreck narrative scenes. Put them together on a single shared document with everyone's scene labeled with their name and share it with me.
If you don't do this, I can't help you with this assignment. Your best draft is due next week.
Go to the Poetry Out Loud Website and read as many poems as you can, making a short list of possibilities for the one you will memorize.
Consider also bookmarking poems that you like or find interesting, even if you don't intend to memorize them, as you will be analyzing 3 of them this month (honors students will analyze 5).
Memorization Tips:
Rewrite your poem by hand several times. Each time, try to write more and more of it from memory.

I do not take late work after Quarter Dates. You must turn in all late work before the First Quarter ends on Friday, October 12th. I have seven 10th-12th graders retaking my class this year due to poor grades. Do not be one of these next year. Other schools will make you retake English as well; high school transcripts follow you...
Students with multiple missing Article of the Week and Essay assignments will be emailing and calling parents & guardians in class next week with their plans for catching up. Don't be one of these people either.
Last thing: I don't put D's and F's in my gradebook. If I get last-minute work and it is garbage, I will not enter it. Get it in on time so I can help you.
Speaking of help, drop in after school or let me know at break that you need help! I can help!
Many things are due today. Please remember that I do not accept late work after the quarter deadline.
MITS Quiz 2 today. Do your best!
You'll complete the Reading Self-Assessment and Book of the Month today. Together these will constitute a major assessment for this class. Answer truthfully and think about your next move if you're struggling to get reading done in and outside of class. I am good at helping students find books that they will enjoy!
TAKE DETAILED NOTES ON EVERY SCENE. You will need them for your narrative writing assignment. If your notes are poor or not done, you will struggle to be successful. Good writers of fiction plan before they write. Do what good writers do; you might find yourself writing well!

Your first reading goal evaluation will be next Thursday/Friday, September 20-21. Please be ready to show how you are making progress toward your reading goal and be ready to analyze what you are currently (or have previously) read.
This will count as a major class assessment. If you're barely reading, please let me help you out. There is a book for you somewhere!

1st Quarter Progress Reports go into the Grade Book this weekend. You should have completed the following items:
"This I Believe" Essay (50 pts)
Article of the Week #1 (Teens Reading, 20 pts)
Article of the Week #2 (Harvard Memes, 20 pts)
MITS Quiz #1 (10 pts)
You need to be reading 2 hours a week. 1 hour is scheduled during class time. The Reading Goal for the year you wrote in the front cover of your notebook is something you need to be working on. It's not acceptable to not have a book every day.
The minimum reading goal is 10.
You need to find something you enjoy. If you don't like your book, abandon it and try another one. See me if you're struggling to find something you like. I will make it my mission to match you with something that is interesting!
If you did not score at least 14/20 on last week's Sentence Mechanics (MITS) Quiz, you need to retake it. I do not enter D or F grades; they are incomplete.
MITS Unit 2 begins today. Save your interactive notes!
This I Believe Essay
You should have a revised draft ready for your peers to read when you come in today. If you're behind, you will need to be writing during the group activity.
Read and review your peers' essays. Give them one thing you love/like and one thing you want to know more about.
Read my comments to you as well this week. Complete a best draft of your essay by Friday, September 7th. I plan to begin assessing them for grading on Saturday.
You should be finished with a first draft of your essay. It might be messy and imperfect; it might be too short or too long. That's okay. Today you'll make it into something better.
Use the RADaR technique to rewrite your draft. Please be sure to put your latest draft on the document I shared with you in Google Drive. If it is there, I will be able to read it and leave you feedback. Please don't rename the document or try to share it with me. I own it.
Check out some of the examples from last year at the bottom of this post if you need some inspiration.
Finish Article of the Week #1 (Why Teens Don't Read). I will take it late this week with no penalty.
Finish your annotations for Article of the Week #2 (Harvard Memes). Start your written reflection.
This I Believe Essay
Continue working on a first draft of your essay. Write freely; your first draft might be messy and imperfect. That's okay. Keep the 500-600 word count in mind, but don't let it stop you from writing what you feel you need to write.
Please remember to turn in your completed Article of the Week assignment. You should print your reflection and staple it to the TOP of your annotated article, then turn in both to the basket. Electronic submissions will not be accepted. I will have these scored and in the gradebook by Tuesday.
Today's Task: Begin working on a draft of your essay.
Article of the Week #1 is due in the basket next week, any day up to Friday.
Wednesday, August 15th
Complete your letter to your 2022 graduating self.
Scroll down to Friday's directions if you're not sure what to do.

Article of the Week
It's important to build knowledge about the world. Every other week or so, you will be given an article, which you are to purposefully annotate and write a 200+ word response. Click here for some examples of how to (and how not to) successfully complete Article of the Week. The top example is the best annotated page. Here's an example of a successful reflection.
Go to goodreads.com and set up an account if you don't already have one. Join our class group. Add some books that you have read, add some you'd like to read, and set up a profile. Please work on your letter before you do this assignment. (The site was not working very well last week. Try again!)
Write a letter to yourself as you prepare to graduate from high school in four years.
Some ideas: my hopes, fears, dreams, intentions, goals, problems, concerns, likes, dislikes, joys, frustrations; what I like about myself; what I don’t like about myself; what I’m proud of; what I think about; what bothers me; who I am, etc.
Some more ideas: predictions of what I accomplished during high school, what I want to do after high school, my long range intentions, what I’m looking forward to; what I’m dreading; my goals, my hopes and fears for the world; summer vacation, high school, college, marriage, employment, etc.
Add something else of interest if you wish. Draw if you like to draw.
Turn in to the basket by Tuesday. Sign the letter with your first and last name so I know who you are.
Letters will be returned to you in June 2022.

Welcome to your Freshman year at SCCA! This website will be your hub for everything we do for this class. Be sure to check it every day, especially when you're absent.
Hi all, I'm out today, so just follow normal procedures: 20 minutes of reading and then work on your portfolio or other things you need to do for the rest of the time.
Help the sub clean up a little if he/she gets in late. Sorry for leaving a mess! My absence is unexpected.
Thank you for coming to this page and working hard today!
Your writing prompt for your writers' notebooks today (please let the sub know that I'm giving you this, as I've not added this to the sub plans):
#32. What if your pet could only talk to you at midnight for an hour? What would you talk about? (If you don't have a pet, imagine one).
Here's your assignment for today:
Greta Thunberg is a 16-year-old from Sweden who has called for a school strike today over climate change. What can you find out about Greta and why she has done this? (I am not encouraging you to join the school strike! It's too late!)
Complete the goals and information page. Be thorough and serious with your goals, as we will be using them all year.
